# The canvas and files

> Add designs, documents, images, GitHub repos, and text notes to a MagicOS, and move around the canvas.

Everything in a MagicOS is a file on one canvas. Agents read and write the same files you see.

## Add a file

Use the **Insert** menu in the navbar, or right-click an empty spot on the canvas:

* **Design**: an interactive React design.
* **Document**: a written doc such as a PRD or spec.
* **Image**: a screenshot or reference. You can also drag images straight onto the canvas or paste them.
* **GitHub repo**: connect a repository so agents can read your real code.
* **Text**: a free-form note for labels and handoff comments.

## Import existing work

The **File** menu brings in work you already have:

* **Import Existing Design**: paste a Magic Patterns design link or pick one of your designs.
* **Import Design System**: pick one of your [design systems](/docs/documentation/design-systems/overview) so agents build with your components and styles.
* **Import from Claude Design**: upload the zip you get from **Share → Project HTML** in Claude Design.

## Work with designs

Double-click a design to open it. Select a design on the canvas and press **Play** to use it like a real app without leaving the canvas. Visual Edit works here the same way it does on a single design.

## Move around

The canvas toolbar has three tools:

* **Pointer** selects and moves files.
* **Hand** pans the canvas.
* **Interact** lets you click inside designs as if they were live.

Files snap to each other as you drag and resize them. Press <kbd>/</kbd> to jump to the chat prompt.

## Give agents context

Select files on the canvas and add them to the chat to point an agent at exactly what you mean. You can also mention a file by name in your prompt.
