Anthropic launched Claude Design in beta in April 2026 as a standalone product built around visual prototyping.

On September 16, Anthropic announced it had merged Claude Design into Claude, so you can now make designs inside a regular conversation. You can now ask Claude for a design in chat, pick Design from the Artifacts tab, or call it from Claude Code.

I'll walk through what changed and how product teams should think about their design tools going forward.

The two biggest changes

1. Design is now a Claude Artifact

Design now also works as an artifact inside Claude chat, Cowork and Claude Code. Artifacts are created by Claude to make sharable content.

While the standalone experience still works for now, Claude is focusing their development resources on this new approach, now supporting Documents, Presentations, and Designs as output templates. Claude Cowork is now more powerful as it can create design artifacts alongside it, but Anthropic sacrificed depth for breadth, eliminating features product teams look for, such as Tweaks.

2. Anthropic migrated your existing Design Systems

Anthropic migrated existing design systems, and each one is now an artifact Claude can use in any chat. You'll find them under Settings > Design systems, plus a banner in the Design tab for migrating older ones.

It has not gone smoothly for everyone. A number of users have reported failed migrations and had to rebuild their design systems from scratch, so make sure to check on how your design system is being leveraged.

Why we think Anthropic made this move

With a confidential S-1 filing and a cut-throat battle with rival OpenAI, it’s clear that Anthropic is racing towards building THE general-purpose assistant and wants to make design skills accessible to all customers. Moving Claude Design inside Claude means any customer can make visuals without learning a separate app.

For Claude Design users, the focus shifts away from product prototyping toward general design work like slides, docs, graphics, motion and web pages.
